SUMMARY:Go Public Action Briefing: Assessment\, Accountability & Adequacy
DESCRIPTION:Wed. Jan. 29\, 2025. 6:30-8:00 pm via zoom. Register to receive the link prior to event. This event is free and open to Wisconsin Public Education Network partners and champions for thriving public schools.  \nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER. \nNew changes to standardized testing scoring and reporting have been the topic of much debate and confusion in recent months\, and a new bill proposal\, LRB 0976: relating to: changes to the educational assessment program and the school and school district accountability report\, is being fast-tracked for co-sponsorship by Senator Jagler and Representatives Wittke and Novak (with a short deadline of Jan. 28 at 4pm). We expect this bill to be fast-tracked for a hearing as well (possibly as early as Feb. 6). \nJoin us on Wed. Jan. 29 from 6:30-8:00 to unpack what this proposal means to how we assess and report student achievement\, and how we can best ensure whatever “accountability” measures the state mandates come with funding adequate to meet the needs of all students. We’ll be joined by Dr. Christopher Saldaña (UW-Madison)\, Dr. David Knight and Dr. Matthew Gardner Kelly (both of the University of Washington)\, and Christopher Thiel (Legislative Policy Manager\, Milwaukee Public Schools)\, with additional discussants tbd. Our experts will provide critical context for this bill\, share how similar changes to cut scores in other states have been enacted\, and discuss the impact on students and public schools. \nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER. \nAbout our speakers: \n\n\nMatthew Gardner Kelly\, Educational Foundations\, Leadership\, and Policy and Social and Cultural Foundations\, University of Washington. Matthew Gardner Kelly studies how racial\, economic\, and spatial inequities in education are created through state action\, normalized in public discourse over time\, and resisted by historically marginalized communities. His first book\, Dividing the Public: School Finance and the Creation of Structural Inequity\, was published by Cornell University Press in 2024. The book traces how a series of seemingly mundane and technical policies connected to public school funding helped create the racially\, economically\, and spatially fragmented postwar metropolis. In tracing how a poorly understood world of lawmaking connected to school funding extracted wealth from communities of color\, subsidized white affluence\, and promoted residential segregation since the 19th century\, the book sheds new light on the culpability of the state in the production of educational inequities that persist in the present. \n\n\nDavid Knight\, Associate Professor\, Danforth Educational Leadership Program and Educational Policy\, Organization and Leadership\, University of Washington. Dr. David Knight is Director of the Center for the Study of Teaching and Policy and the Center for Early Childhood Policy and Equity at the University of Washington College of Education and serves as Associate Professor of Education Finance and Policy. David is a Fellow at the National Education Policy Center and a member of the Board of Trustees of the National Education Finance Academy. \nChristopher Saldaña is an assistant professor of K-12 educational leadership and policy analysis at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Chris’s research examines the relationship between K-12 school finance and educational opportunity\, focusing particularly on the educational experiences of minoritized and marginalized students. Chris uses multiple and mixed methods in his research. \nThis event is part of our 2025 GO PUBLIC! ACTION LAB\, a series of briefings with education experts\, policy analysts and advocates to unpack and understand the content and impacts of legislative proposals and find common ground for local action with statewide impact. \n

SUMMARY:Partner Event: A Conversation with ELC Senior Fellow Josh Cowen\, Author of 'The Privateers: How Billionaires Created a Culture War and Sold School Vouchers' Hosted by Public Funds Public Schools
DESCRIPTION:Public Funds Public Schools is thrilled to announce that Dr. Josh Cowen\, leading national expert on private school vouchers\, will be featured in PFPS’s next webinar on October 24 at 2pm CT. \nREGISTER HERE \nDr. Cowen\, currently a Senior Fellow at Education Law Center\, which directs the PFPS campaign\, will discuss his new book\, The Privateers: How Billionaires Created a Culture War and Sold School Vouchers\, with Maria Bautista\, Lead Trainer at NYU Metro Center’s Education Justice Research and Organizing Collaborative. \nDr. Cowen’s book provides a deep-dive investigation of education privatization. It covers a range of topics\, including the origins of private school vouchers and the network of billionaire conservatives who have converged around the issue. The Privateers also highlights how vouchers are failing students and exacerbating income inequality\, arguing that advancement of privatization policies is an assault on public education as a defining American institution. \nRegister here for The Privateers: How Billionaires Created a Culture War and Sold School Vouchers. \nDr. Cowen is a professor of education policy at Michigan State University. He is frequently quoted in media stories about private school vouchers and has published numerous scholarly articles on the subject. Recently\, his writing has focused on voucher students’ poor academic results\, as well as the role of vouchers in defunding and segregating public schools. Dr. Cowen is currently taking a one-year distinguished leave from MSU to provide strategic\, policy\, research\, and communications advice and direction for Education Law Center’s anti-voucher work and to add to PFPS’s research and advocacy tools. \nMaria Bautista is the Lead Trainer at NYU Metro Center’s Education Justice Research and Organizing Collaborative\, where she is supporting national education justice campaigns\, including the launch of a national training program to support education organizing. She previously worked at the Alliance for Quality Education\, leading a campaign that secured major victories for New York State students\, including the successful push for the state to pay $4 billion owed to public schools. With over 15 years of experience in organizing\, Maria focuses on racial justice\, community building\, and leadership development. She holds a Master’s in Social Work and has extensive policy expertise in education and racial justice.

SUMMARY:Partner Event: The Education Funding Cliff (and how to win sustainable funding for our schools) Hosted by HEAL Together
DESCRIPTION:Join this workshop to better understand how school funding works and how we can successfully advocate and organize for the sustainable funding all our students deserve. \nREGISTER HERE \nThe federal government has distributed almost $200 billion of much-needed relief funds to public education since the COVID-19 pandemic. While these Elementary and Secondary Emergency Relief (ESSER) funds were a temporary solution\, the needs they addressed are ongoing\, caused by decades of systemic underfunding. This underfunding has hit Black\, Indigenous\, Latinx\, and immigrant communities\, as well as low income communities\, the hardest. \nFederal support for our public schools meant students and their families experienced many positive academic\, social and emotional benefits. They also received direct benefits\, from one-on-one tutoring\, to free summer schools\, to additional support personnel for students with disabilities and more. \nBut that federal support will come to an end very soon – September 30th\, 2024. \nAs this funding-cliff approaches\, it is important that we equip ourselves with the organizing knowledge and tools to effectively demand that our state and federal government provide the long-term\, full funding our public schools so desperately need.
